Something different

Welcome to Geoverse once again! In today's post I'm going to tell you how to play a very cool game that a friend of mine explained to me a few days ago.  It is a game that they made in her class to work on symmetry, although it is done in a dynamic way, putting the exercises and representations into practice, since seeing things represented graphically makes them clearer.  But before we start the game, do you know what symmetry is? I'm going to explain it to you in case someone doesn't know it, so that the rest of you can review it.we say that a figure is geometric when we can divide it into two or more parts but all of them coincide in shape, size and properties, as we can see in the following figure:  Once you know what symmetry is, I could explain that there are several types and their characteristics, although for the game it is not necessary, so I will list them very briefly. We have axial, central or rotational symmetry, among others, which are applied depend...

TETRIS

We are back once again! As in the previous post, today I'm going to tell you about a new game, although this one is older than the others we have been working with so far. I'm sure your parents have played it at some point.  It is ... Tetris! Even if you didn't know the name, I think that after seeing the picture, everyone recognizes this game, otherwise I recommend that as soon as you finish reading the post, you go running to look for it and play for a while, you won't regret it.  Starting with the history of the game, Tetris is a video game created in 1984 by Alexey Pajitnov, and after several years of fighting with different companies for its publication, the game started to become popular, being finally Tetris Company who got the rights of the game, a company founded by Henk Rogers and Pajitnov himself.  Returning to the game, the ultimate goal is to get as many points as possible by joining the different geometric shapes that appear randomly, with the handica...

TANGRAM

Hello everybody! We're back with one of the most popular board games in history - can you guess what it is? The tangram! Did you get it right? Well, that's the least of it. The important thing comes now, let's get started. The tangram is a very old puzzle that first appeared in China, and although it has no definite date, it is said to be more than two thousand years old! This puzzle is made up of 7 different geometric pieces, among which we find two large triangles, a medium-sized one, two small triangles, a square and a parallelogram.  With these pieces, the aim is to create different figures or images by moving and combining pieces, trying a multitude of possible combinations that the use of such a variety of pieces allows us to do. Here you can see several examples:  And although in this image you can see how to make the different figures, how you have to combine the pieces, the good thing is to make them from the figures without clues, so that you can also work you...

GEOMETRY DASH

Welcome back! As I told you that we were going to work with different games related to geometry, I am going to keep my promise. In this case, it's time to talk about Geometry Dash, an arcade video game in which our character has to jump over blocks and avoid different obstacles in order to pass to the next level.  And to begin with, you don't have to go very far to find the geometric relationship with the game, as the character is a square, which can vary its "face", always with geometric elements, but the face is still a square.  If we continue analysing the photo above, we can see that the character is jumping over an obstacle in the shape of a triangle. And what was a triangle? Exactly! A geometric shape.  The whole game is surrounded and made up entirely of different geometric shapes; from the main character, to the obstacles, to the ships used in some screens, and even the background of the levels.  For example, in this screen of the second level, we can ...

RUBIK

Hello everybody! We are back and this time, with a totally different post from the previous ones, and the time has come to talk about different geometric games with which you can develop your mind to the maximum and that will put your skills and abilities to develop.  But well, let's go step by step. In this first entry, we are going to start talking about Rubik's Cubes, which is a three-dimensional mechanical puzzle, created by the Hungarian Ernő Rubik in 1974, and hence the name of this famous puzzle, which you can see in the following photo:  And although the cube was originally a 3x3 cube, today there are a multitude of cubes of different dimensions and even with different shapes. Although the objective of all of them is the same, to achieve through a series of algorithms that all the faces are of the same colour, with all the blocks or pieces of the same colour located in the same place. Therefore, and returning to the traditional cube, it always has 6 uniform colo...

SPIDERVERSE

Welcome back, do you feel like learning more about geometry? Well, here we go! Without departing too much from the previous entry as we are going to continue with the cinema, the time has come to talk about the latest Spiderman movie, "Spiderman no way home". I don't know if you have already seen this film, but if not, I recommend that as soon as you finish reading this post, you go and do it, because you won't regret it, and even less if you consider yourself a Marvel fan.  Well, without going too far into the film to avoid spoilers, I'm going to talk about one of the moments in which geometry is most present in the whole film. There is a moment in which Spiderman (Tom Holland) and Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) travel to a mirror dimension, where they can fold and deform space with total freedom?  That's the crux of the matter, because although in the film we are led to believe that it is magic done by Doctor Strange, the reality is totally differen...

HER

And since promises are promises, here we are back to talk about cinema and its relationship with geometry. And although I could talk about thousands of films, in order not to be too heavy I have chosen just one.  It's called "Her", and it's a very special film for me, so I hope you enjoy this post. First of all, though, I have to explain what the film is about, otherwise it will be impossible for me to explain the importance of geometry in its plans.  The film depicts a futuristic world in which people like the protagonist, people with many difficulties in relating to others, seeing their ideals fulfilled or expressing their feelings to others, resort to operating systems that conform to their aforementioned ideals, finally being able to live a life they have been dreaming of for years.  The film was released in 2013 and stars Scarlett Johanson and Oscar winner Joaquin Phoemix. The latter understood his role very well, so added to the film's message and the shots ...
